Web offers unique opportunities for our students to make
intellectual and cultural connections to language.
Discover the resources and strategies to create these
opportunities for your students.

learn to use authentic websites in diverse, meaningful activities.
Discussion will focus on activities, their development, and their
implementation within larger units.
Participants will divide time between exploring websites,
designing activities, and sharing teaching ideas with peers.

Connect to Tech: Hands-on Practicum for Web-based Activities (Central States '04)
This workshop will focus on engaging technology-based activities based on commercial websites designed for native speakers. Participants will try out activities ranging from simple warm-ups to multiple-day projects in Spanish and French, then search for and learn how to design similar activities for websites and topics of their choice. The presenter will also share specific classroom practices that enable all learners to be successful and will explain how to integrate technology-based activities into larger units of instruction. Examples in Spanish and French but applicable to all languages. Limited to 30 participants.

learn to use in a surprisingly short amount of time.
The session will include a presentation of diverse
PowerPoint-based lessons, basic instruction in PowerPoint,
time-saving planning ideas, and an opportunity to complete a sample
instructional project. So
grab your laptop (or your media specialist’s),
and join us for a productive introduction to PowerPoint in
the language classroom. (Note:
Participants must have PowerPoint already loaded on their laptops.)

Hyperstudio + Teachers = Templates for Language Learning (MFLA '99 & '00)
Foreign language software and Internet resources enrich our classrooms. However our needs are often specific; requiring
opportunities to practice selected language functions via predetermined vocabulary. This hands-on workshop will enable you to
combine basic Hyperstudio features to create creative lessons that are easy to customize to suit diverse language learning goals.
Novice and experienced users will develop a repertoire of template-building strategies to create short activities and expanded
projects.

Supporting Language Learning with Technology (LinguisTech)
This overview is an important beginning for any longer workshop. In this brief session we discuss the big picture: how
technology can be used to support our most fundamental beliefs about language learning. We discuss why effective
implementation of technology-assisted learning is as an integral part of an instructional program and how we can use it to
facilitate student learning of language skills. We review the role of technology, stages of implementation and issues to consider
as we develop a framework for how technology can support our work.

Thinking About Language Learning Software

In this session we discuss strategies for making thoughtful decisions about software selection. We begin by discussing the
categories of available software and a broad spectrum of features and design issues help us assess the quality of existing
software. This session includes demonstrations of several titles, including examples of both excellent and ineffective pieces of
software. While technical specs are not our focus, we discuss enough technical information to allow teachers to determine
what they could use in their classrooms and how to price
licenses.

The WWW & Foreign Language Learning

This session illustrates how Web sites provide essential resources for foreign language instruction. We begin with an overview
of the diverse tools of the Internet. We discuss paradigms for Internet use in the foreign language classroom (Communication,
Resource/Research, Publication) We then consider an approach for developing Web-based activities which includes specific
instructional strategies for using Web-based resources with diverse levels of students. As time permits we can participate in
hands-on sample student activities and/or explore strategies to help teachers effectively locate resources for use in their own
classroom activities.

Supporting Writing With Technology
(LinguisTech)
We begin this session by discussing ACTFL proficiency guidelines to help teachers articulate their writing goals for their
classes. We next discuss potential writing assignments for each level. We then explore available technologies and how those
tools can support our efforts. We will examine foreign language support for standard word processors, "Writing Assistants", and process writing tools
. We will also
discuss multimedia writing assignments. Finally, we will consider Internet-based writing
exchanges including keypals, websites, and a look at the International Poetry Guild (University of Michigan).
