Casa Frameworks: Technology-Infused Writing (MiWLA '05)
Handouts: Project OverviewsOrganizing Concepts/Rubrics
Our level-one students begin by writing post cards and write complete essays by third quarter.  We do this by giving students engaging topics, Internet-based inspiration and diverse activities.  Projects include: Exaggerated Post Cards, skits, Fashion Prescriptions, autobiographies and a Dream House essay. We will discuss the technology we use and our instructional practices, i.e. writing codes, Focus Correction Areas, rubrics and the beloved Genie Rule.  Strategies presented are relevant to upper levels.

Technology-Infused Learning: Evolving Strategies (MFLA '02)
Once upon a time, I created an Internet-based unit on the Day of the Dead. More aligned with the National Standards, and with a more thoughtful rubric, it is better today. Explore the evolution of this work and other technology-infused projects from our classroom. We will focus on the projects themselves and the classroom practices that make them possible. Whatever language you teach, whatever your technical experience, we should have something of interest to you.

Web Literacy for Foreign Language Learning: An Integrated Approach (MACUL '02)
The web offers unprecedented access to authentic texts in other languages. Conventional reading strategies are useful starting points but students need literacy strategies, unique to web-based explorations, to confidently engage in sites designed for native speakers. Come learn about the strategies we use. Lessons feature integrated use of Office applications.

Casa Favorites: Developing Authentic Activities on the Web (MFLA '01)
This session will begin by highlighting outstanding websites for the French and Spanish classroom.  We will then consider how to use these sites as starting points for meaningful student explorations.  Throughout our discussions we will consider those literacy strategies, unique to web-based learning, that your students need to confidently engage in sites designed for native speakers.

Technology-Infused Planning: Teacher Strategies (MFLA '00)

A technology-rich classroom can save teachers time and foster creativity. Come see one teacher's repertoire of strategies. Explore "strategy snapshots," mini-presentations showcasing applications of general software for language teachers. Snapshots utilize Word to create activity templates; PowerPoint as a springboard for classroom interactions and a support for Internet-based readings; Excel as a medium for flexible lesson design; and grading software to manage the classroom. Presentation includes background for novices and new ideas for advanced users.

Day of the Dead: A Technology-Infused Model (MFLA '98)
This Day of the Dead unit is a practical model of how websites can facilitate cultural exploration. We begin by discussing activities from initial brainstorming to creative cumulative projects. We then discuss how websites were located and effectively reorganized. Finally we consider strategies to accommodate diverse teaching environments. Session is relevant to novice and experienced computer-users. Model is easily adapted for other languages and language levels. Speaker utilizes PowerPoint, cached websites and sugar. Reproducibles/URLs provided.

The Technology-Rich Foreign Language Classroom (MACUL '98)
Technology needs to be part of our regular classroom life. This session will focus on meaningful short assignments, based upon diverse software, which successfully support language learning. Lessons are based upon foreign language software, original templates, Hyperstudio and the Web. Lessons can be easily adapted for subjects across the curriculum.

Beyond URLs: The WWW and Foreign Language Learning (MACUL '97)
This session will illustrate how Web sites provide essential resources for foreign language instruction and an approach for developing Web-based activities. The session will include instructional strategies, sample activities, and yes, a plethora of annotated URLs. Although specifically focused on second language education, the issues we address can benefit technology implementation in a variety of disciplines and learning environments.
